Traditional literacy skills…you mean the ability to read and write and make sense of the world through those modes?

“Having a clear focus as to what it means to have the requisite tools for life in the 21st century ” – definitely an essential point for inquiry. Not sure if that means being digitally literate as opposed to just literate, but this is not my thesis :)

I agree with Ian. This phrase:
“The technologies which mediate life in the 21st century in first-world nations…” is immense in scope.

Your key challenge may lie in the terms of reference you set yourself here. The 21st Century will probably contain more technological change than the rest of history put together. It might be wiser to swallow your literary elegance and specify a tighter date range.

This is my first comment with CommentPress; initial reaction is that it falls between two stools. I could have made the comment above in general comments; equally, I would quite like the ability to underline a word or phrase and comment on that alone. But perhaps it will grow on me. Sometimes these things just take time.
